Olympic Gymnastics Legend Mary Lou Retton Arrested for DUI

Olympic gymnastics legend Mary Lou Retton was arrested on a DUI charge in West Virginia earlier this month. According to court records, she was charged with one count of driving under the influence of alcohol or controlled substances on May 17.

Retton, 57, had previously faced health issues in 2023 when she was diagnosed with a rare form of pneumonia. Her family described her as “fighting for her life,” but she made a remarkable recovery and spoke about being grateful to be alive during an interview with NBC’s “Today” in 2024.

Retton is best known for her gold medal-winning performance at the 1984 Summer Games, where she scored perfect 10s on floor exercise and vault. She was just 16 years old at the time and became the first American woman to win the Olympic all-around title, earning five medals overall.

After retiring from gymnastics, Retton went on to become a motivational speaker, sharing messages about the importance of proper nutrition and exercise. She also served on the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports under former President George W. Bush.
