Olympic Legend Mary Lou Retton Arrested for DUI

US gymnastics legend Mary Lou Retton was arrested on May 17 in Marion County, West Virginia, and charged with a misdemeanor count of driving under the influence of alcohol or controlled substances. She was released after posting a $1,500 bond.

Retton, 57, was pulled over by police from her hometown of Fairmont while responding to a report about a Porsche being driven erratically. According to the criminal complaint, she smelled of alcohol and slurred her words during the stop. The police also found a container of wine in the passenger seat and observed that Retton refused both a roadside breath test and a blood test.

Retton’s attorney declined to comment on the matter. However, it is worth noting that the gymnast had previously revealed she was fighting for her life with a rare form of pneumonia without medical insurance. Despite this, Retton has spoken publicly about her health struggles, stating she was grateful for the holiday season and relieved to be in recovery mode.

Retton’s DUI charge follows her Olympic success in 1984, where she became the first US gymnast to win gold in the all-around competition. She went on to win several other medals before retiring from competitive gymnastics.
