Olympic Snowboarder Dies in Avalanche at 26

Switzerland’s Olympic snowboarder Sophie Hediger has died in an avalanche in Arosa, Switzerland. She was 26. The Swiss ski federation said Hediger was buried under a large amount of snow while snowboarding with a companion on a closed black diamond slope.

Hediger was part of the national snowboard cross team and had competed in several international races, including the 2022 Olympics in Beijing. Her death has shocked the sports community, with the Swiss Ski Federation describing it as “a dark shadow over the Christmas holidays.” The federation said Hediger will be honored for her memory.
