Omaha Basketball Player Deng Mayar Dies in Drowning Incident

Omaha University basketball player Deng Mayar, 22, died Saturday in a drowning incident at Blackridge Reservoir in Utah. Mayar was with a friend when they began struggling in the water, and despite efforts to rescue him, his body was recovered late Saturday night. His friend, who is expected to recover, helped pull him out of the water before going back in for assistance. The school announced the news on Sunday, saying their entire program is devastated by Mayar’s passing. Coach Chris Crutchfield called Mayar “a joy to be around” and praised his addition to the team, citing his growth and contributions to the team culture. Mayar was raised in Salt Lake City and averaged 6.3 points and 4.0 rebounds for North Dakota last season before transferring to Omaha this offseason.
