Omdurman Market Shelling Leaves Tens Dead and Hundreds Injured

Shelling at a busy market in Sudan’s capital city has filled a mortuary with bodies, according to medical charity Doctors Without Borders (MSF). The attack in Omdurman on Saturday killed over 100 people, mostly women and children, with more than 200 injured. The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) were blamed for the attack, which was denied by the RSF.

The conflict between the RSF and Sudan’s army has been ongoing for over 22 months, killing tens of thousands and sparking a devastating humanitarian crisis. The UN describes it as one of the world’s worst disasters.

Eyewitnesses said the artillery shelling came from western Omdurman, where the RSF remains in control. The hospital nearby was overwhelmed with injured patients, with many more seeking medical attention due to an acute shortage of staff. One shell landed just meters away from the hospital, causing “utter carnage” and further straining the already limited resources.

The Sudanese Doctors’ Union has appealed for help, as both sides have been accused of targeting civilians, including health workers, and indiscriminate shelling of residential areas. The recent skirmishes have forced emergency response rooms to shut several health centers, affecting thousands of residents.
