The absence of Insecure left a significant void in the TV landscape since its conclusion in December 2021. Issa Rae’s groundbreaking series was a seminal portrait of complex female friendship, and now, a new buddy comedy aims to fill that void. One of Them Days, executive produced by Rae and written by Syreeta Singleton, follows two wayward twenty-something besties living paycheck to paycheck in south Los Angeles.
Keke Palmer stars as Dreux, a charismatic diner owner with aspirations to become a franchise manager, while singer SZA plays Alyssa, her artist friend who ekes out a living on whatever means possible. The duo is on a tight deadline: pay rent, attend a corporate interview, and avoid eviction. As they navigate gentrification and financial struggles, they embark on a quest to recover the cash their friend’s boyfriend owes them.
The film benefits from its lead actors, particularly Palmer, who brings natural gravity and distinct delivery to her role. SZA also shines in her acting debut, particularly in her banter with Palmer. While some scenes feel try-hard or gimmicky, the duo’s chemistry makes the movie enjoyable despite its flaws.
One of Them Days offers a unique perspective on Black-led female theatrical comedy, making its moment count. With a believably character-populated apartment community and consistent energy, this film is worth watching for fans of Insecure and comedy enthusiasts alike. The movie hits US theaters on January 17th, with a UK date to be announced.
