As a parent, it’s easy to get caught up in screens like smartphones and laptops, especially when kids are around. But one small experiment changed everything.
About a year ago, I tried not using my personal electronic devices while with my 6- and 10-year-old daughters for just a month. It was inconvenient at times but also made me more aware of how much I was ignoring them on the phone or laptop. As a result, we connected more, and they noticed too.
Research backs up this notion: parental screen use in front of their child is associated with higher total screen time and problematic social media, video games, and mobile phone use in early adolescents. So, it’s not just about setting rules; it’s about modeling good technology habits.
I’ve recommitted to putting down my phone when my kids enter the room and announcing it so they know. This small change has already made a big impact on our relationships. By being mindful of whether I really need to be on a screen, I’m showing my family that I value them more.
By doing one small thing – like this – you can start changing your relationship with technology and those around you.
