Online Extremist Network ‘764’ Spreads Across Social Media Platforms

A US-based online extremist network called “764” is spreading across social media platforms, targeting vulnerable teens and pushing them to harm themselves or others. Career Justice Department officials have issued dire warnings about the threat posed by 764, describing it as a serious and metastasizing evil.

The network’s members use popular online platforms to target young people, elicit private information, and threaten and blackmail victims into self-harm or violent actions. Members often target underage females who are struggling with mental health issues, establishing trusting relationships before manipulating and coercing them.

The Justice Department has received over 2,000 reports of abuse linked to 764 or similar networks in the first nine months of this year, double the number of reports from last year. The FBI is investigating over 350 people across the US with suspected ties to 764.

Career officials warn that current laws can make it difficult to prosecute cases related to 764. However, federal prosecutors are trying to find ways to use existing laws and are now taking a harder look at whether charges might be warranted in cases involving minors.

A recent case involved a 19-year-old man who admitted to participating in a criminal enterprise with 764, including grooming young girls for extortion and self-mutilation. The network’s ideology is centered around causing the downfall of society, with members aiming to create a “Darwinian society” where only the strongest survive.

The Justice Department has already charged at least 37 people with ties to 764, and authorities are working to address the growing threat posed by this online extremist network.
