A major study on chronic back pain has found that only one treatment in ten provides significant relief, leaving millions of Americans and Brits with debilitating conditions without effective solutions.
Researchers from the University of New South Wales in Australia examined 301 trials covering 56 non-surgical treatments for adult back pain, including exercises like yoga and Pilates.
The study revealed that only one type of exercise (spinal manipulative therapy), taping, antidepressants, and certain pain medications (such as ibuprofen) showed ‘slight’ or ‘small’ reductions in pain.
However, the experts warn that even these treatments have minimal benefits, making it difficult for them to strongly recommend any particular form of therapy.
The study’s authors stressed the need for more research to find effective treatments for back pain and called for large-scale trials with high-quality data.
