Ontario Legislature Remains Mostly Unchanged After Snap Election

A four-week snap election campaign has concluded in Ontario, with the Progressive Conservatives retaining a near identical legislature to the one that was dissolved at the end of January. The party won 80 seats, compared to 79 at dissolution, while the NDP secured 27 seats, down from 28. The Liberals made significant gains, moving to 14 seats from nine.

The main areas where parties changed hands include Ajax, where a Liberal candidate unseated a Progressive Conservative; Algoma-Manitoulin, where the PCs picked up a seat won by an NDP candidate in 2022; and Toronto-St Paul’s, which saw a historic swing towards the Liberals after voting orange in previous elections.

The cost of organizing the province-wide ballot was estimated to be around $189 million. With no major cabinet ministers unseated and party leaders remaining unchanged, the election has been described as largely uneventful, with some minor shifts in power dynamics between parties.
