Open-Source Vulkan Driver Honeykrisp Merged for Mesa 24.3, Not Ready for End-Users: Supports Apple M1 and M2 SoCs, Needs Performance Improvements

A new open-source Vulkan driver called Honeykrisp, which supports Apple Silicon GPUs as part of the Asahi Linux project, has been merged into Mesa 24.3. This reverse-engineered Vulkan driver, started by Alyssa Rosenzweig, is based on NVK sources and currently only works with Apple M1 and M2 SoCs. Support for newer SoCs will be added later. The performance of this driver is subpar at the moment and not recommended for end-users. Honeykrisp is not yet ready for use by end users despite being merged into Mesa 24.3, as it still requires out-of-tree Mesa patches and needs significant performance improvements. Additionally, there are ongoing efforts to package Honeykrisp with krun and FEX on the non-Mesa side before it becomes useful for x86 games.
