OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has addressed viral rumors that his company had achieved artificial general intelligence (AGI) behind closed doors. In a post on X, Altman stated that the company has not built or deployed AGI and warned fans to cut their expectations by 100x.
Rumors about OpenAI’s achievement of AGI gained traction after some AI enthusiasts interpreted recent teasers posted by employees as evidence that the company had reached the milestone. However, OpenAI staffers have been trying to calm the hype, including Altman himself, who predicted in a blog post this month that 2025 may be the year we see the first AI agents join the workforce.
Other researchers and experts have also chimed in to address the hype. Noam Brown, a top OpenAI researcher, wrote on X that “lots of vague AI hype” has been circulating on social media, and while there is reason to be optimistic about further progress, many research problems remain unsolved.
The comments appear to respond to reports that major AI labs, including OpenAI, have hit a wall in improving current large language models. The debate over whether AI gains have hit the scaling limit has taken hold in Silicon Valley, with some researchers trying to incorporate new improvements to build reasoning capabilities into AI models.
