A former engineer at Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, has spoken out against his former boss after being poached by rival firm OpenAI. Javier Soto shared a screenshot of his response to xAI, in which he rebuffed the offer and called out Musk for spreading misinformation.
Soto cited Musk’s social media rhetoric as a major threat to democracy and claimed that he was knowingly manipulating people through false information. He also stated that xAI would struggle to hire diverse and talented talent due to its association with Musk.
In response, xAI head engineer Igor Babuschkin blamed an unnamed employee for instituting the rule instructing Grok 3 to ignore sources critical of Musk. Soto then called out Babuschkin for “throwing an employee under the bus on Twitter,” a move he deemed “next-level toxic behavior.”
It remains unclear who was responsible for the alleged instruction, but it’s clear that xAI’s recruitment efforts backfired. The incident highlights the challenges xAI faces in recruiting top talent amid its association with Musk and his controversial rhetoric.
