OpenAI has rolled out group chats globally for its popular chatbot, ChatGPT. This feature allows users to collaborate with each other and ChatGPT in a shared conversation. The company views group chats as a way to facilitate teamwork, coordination, and decision-making among friends, family, or coworkers.
With group chats, up to 20 people can participate simultaneously, provided they’ve accepted an invite. Users can add participants directly or share a link, and each person must set up a short profile with their name, username, and photo. Personal settings and memories remain private.
To join a conversation, users tap the people icon, tap “add participants,” and tag someone to initiate a response from ChatGPT. The chatbot can react with emojis and reference profile photos.
This feature marks OpenAI’s latest step in transforming ChatGPT into a social platform, following the launch of its GPT-5.1 model and Sora social app last month. As group chats become more popular, users will be able to plan, create, and make decisions together with the assistance of ChatGPT.
