OpenAI is joining forces with the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) to launch the National Academy for AI Instruction, a five-year initiative aimed at equipping 400,000 K-12 educators in the US with the skills to harness the power of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The partnership seeks to empower teachers to shape the future of AI in schools and ensure that AI enhances rather than bypasses teaching.
The $10 million investment will support the launch of additional hubs around the US by 2030, establishing a flagship facility in New York City. The Academy will offer free training and curriculum, combining real classroom expertise with cutting-edge technology, to help educators develop practical AI fluency by 2030.
Key components of the initiative include:
– Priority access to OpenAI’s technology and future tools for education
– Tokens and API credits to build custom AI tools
– Technical support to integrate AI tools into schools’ learning systems
The co-founders of OpenAI, Sam Altman and Randi Weingarten, emphasize the importance of teachers leading the conversation around how to harness AI’s potential. They believe that educators should prioritize setting commonsense guardrails and putting teachers in the driver’s seat to enhance teaching and learning.
The National Academy for AI Instruction builds on existing resources such as the OpenAI Academy, ChatGPT for Education, and the OpenAI Forum. The initiative also marks the upcoming AFT AI Symposium, co-sponsored by OpenAI, set to take place on July 24 in Washington, DC.
