OpenAI Launches Study Mode in ChatGPT

Artificial intelligence (AI) company OpenAI has introduced “Study Mode” within its popular chatbot platform ChatGPT, aiming to help students work through problems step-by-step before arriving at an answer.

The new feature is designed for all users on the Free, Plus, Pro, and Team plans. According to OpenAI, Study Mode was created in response to concerns that students are using AI tools like ChatGPT to avoid critical thinking and cheating.

When used as a learning tool, ChatGPT can significantly improve academic performance, but when relied upon for direct answers, it hinders learning, said Leah Belsky, vice president of education at OpenAI. To address this issue, Study Mode presents guiding questions instead of direct answers, encouraging students to work through homework problems and test prep materials.

A demo showcasing the feature was released, demonstrating how a student can use Study Mode for help with a homework problem. The chatbot guides the user through two steps, then asks them to summarize their answer in their own words.

OpenAI collaborated with teachers, scientists, education experts, and students to develop Study Mode. This comes as CEO Sam Altman recently expressed his doubts about the future of traditional college education, suggesting that AI may revolutionize it.

Study Mode is set to launch on ChatGPT Edu later this month and will be available to all users starting from Tuesday.
