OpenAI Misses Deadline for Creator Opt-Out Tool

OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, has missed its self-imposed deadline to launch a tool that allows content creators to exclude their works from AI training datasets. The company had promised to release Media Manager by 2025 but has yet to do so.

Media Manager was announced as an in-development tool that would help identify copyrighted text, images, audio, and video across multiple sources and reflect creator preferences. However, according to a report by TechCrunch, the project was not considered a priority.

Instead, creators can currently prevent their works from being used to train OpenAI’s models through a submission form. The company has also stated that its web-crawling bots will respect the robot.txt standard to prevent indiscriminate data scraping.

OpenAI has faced numerous copyright infringement lawsuits, including those brought by actors such as Sarah Silverman and authors like George RR Martin. The company has also signed content licensing deals with major news publishers.
