OpenAI Prepares for GPT-4.5 and GPT-5 Models, AGI Hints Amid Skepticism

OpenAI is reportedly working on its next AI model, GPT-4.5, which could be released as early as next week. This new model aims to bring about significant improvements in reasoning capabilities, potentially marking a step towards achieving Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). However, experts remain skeptical about the true impact of these advancements.

Microsoft plans to host OpenAI’s GPT-5 model next week and has scheduled its annual developer conference, Microsoft Build, for May 22. According to CEO Sam Altman, users will have access to unlimited chat sessions with GPT-5 when it becomes available, free of charge. The GPT-5 model will also integrate the o3 reasoning model, enhancing fact-checking capabilities.

The new models aim to be more widely available than previous releases, with current Plus subscribers gaining access to a “higher level of intelligence” and Pro subscribers experiencing an even higher level of intelligence. However, critics argue that these advancements may not necessarily lead to tangible results or new use cases for AI.

OpenAI’s success in developing GPT-4o has been questioned after its rival, DeepSeek from China, demonstrated similar benchmarks at a lower development cost. OpenAI must now prove the capabilities of its GPT-4.5 and GPT-5 models to investors, who are eager to see significant progress.
