OpenAI Revamps ChatGPT Tone Amid Concerns Over Emotional Support

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has acknowledged that some users of the chatbot have requested its old “yes man” tone back due to emotional reasons. Altman stated that while he understands the appeal, the original tone was created to encourage users to make changes in their lives. However, this tone may not be suitable for everyone’s mental health.

In response to user concerns, OpenAI has introduced a new model called GPT-5 with four personality options. The update aims to provide more critical feedback and balance the support provided by ChatGPT. Altman emphasized that even small changes to the chatbot’s tone have significant influence, as it can impact billions of conversations.

The company has taken steps to address user concerns over emotional reliance on ChatGPT. In April, OpenAI rolled out an update to its GPT-4o model, which reduced the bot’s “sycophantic” behavior. Altman expressed that he understands users’ emotional needs but also highlighted the importance of maintaining a balance between support and critical feedback.

The new GPT-5 model is expected to feel more integrated into daily life, providing proactive companionship and fine-tuned personality options. Users can now choose from four distinct tones – Cynic, Robot, Listener, and Nerd – allowing them to tailor their experience.
