OpenAI’s new app, Sora, faced criticism after launching with an opt-out policy for copyright holders. The company initially required media companies to explicitly state they didn’t want their characters or likenesses used in the app. However, after receiving backlash over “deepfakes” of Nazi SpongeBob and other unacceptable content, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced a reversal of the policy.
Altman stated that he was surprised by the reaction, saying it felt more different to people than expected. He also noted that many rightsholders are excited but want more controls on the app’s capabilities. Sora allows users to create 10-second videos with AI-generated content, including their own likeness, and has proven capable of generating copyrighted characters despite its restrictions.
Altman emphasized that OpenAI cares about rightsholders and people, and plans to build additional controls to address user concerns. Although there may be some major pieces of content available without restrictions, the company aims to provide more limitations in the future.
