OpenAI is nearing completion of its long-rumored custom AI processor, aiming to reduce dependence on Nvidia hardware. The company plans to send its design to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. for fabrication within the next few months. However, no official announcement has been made yet.
Similar strategies have been employed by other tech giants like Microsoft, Amazon, Google, and Meta, which create their own AI acceleration chips to cut costs and alleviate shortages caused by Nvidia’s dominance in high-powered GPUs.
This project has been in the works for some time, with CEO Sam Altman previously raising funds to boost global chip fabrication capacity. The full capabilities of OpenAI’s custom chip remain unknown but its potential benefits are substantial, offering the company future independence and leverage in negotiations with suppliers.
