OpenAI Unveils ‘Deep Research’ Tool Ahead of Tokyo Meetings

US tech giant OpenAI has unveiled a new tool called “deep research” ahead of high-level meetings in Tokyo. The move comes as China’s DeepSeek chatbot heats up competition in the AI field.

Artificial intelligence newcomer DeepSeek has sent Silicon Valley into a frenzy with its high performance and low cost, prompting calls for US developers to speed up their efforts.

OpenAI said its new tool “accomplishes in tens of minutes what would take a human many hours”. It will help create comprehensive reports from online sources, similar to those made by research analysts.

During a livestreamed video announcement, OpenAI researchers showed how the tool can synthesise web search data to recommend ski equipment for a snow holiday in Japan.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and SoftBank Group head Masayoshi Son in Tokyo, as part of their efforts to boost US AI infrastructure. The plans include building AI data centres and power plants, with no specified investment scale.

Altman also hinted at developing “a new kind of hardware” using artificial intelligence, but said it would take several years to unveil a prototype. He called DeepSeek’s performance “good”, but noted its capability level isn’t new. OpenAI is working closely with US authorities amid concerns Chinese companies are trying to replicate its AI models.
