OpenAI has developed a new AI tool called “deep research” that can generate reports that rival those produced by human researchers. The tool, powered by OpenAI’s latest cutting-edge model o3, can sift through hundreds of online sources to create comprehensive reports in just 10 minutes.
The company claims that deep research can accomplish tasks in 10 minutes what would take a human many hours. The tool is designed for professionals working in finance, science, engineering, and other areas, but can also analyze purchases like cars and furniture.
OpenAI said the tool will be available as a button in ChatGPT and will cite sources for each claim made. It has been described as a “significant step” towards achieving artificial general intelligence. The company says deep research takes between 5-30 minutes to complete each task, depending on the complexity of the query.
Andrew Rogoyski, director at the Institute for People-Centred AI at the University of Surrey, warned that humans may rely on tools like deep research without verifying their accuracy first. He noted that knowledge-intensive AIs require significant human oversight due to their limitations in analysis and verification.
Deep research will be available in the US for users of OpenAI’s Pro tier ($200/month), with a limit of 100 queries per month, reflecting the cost of processing each query. It is not yet available in the UK and Europe.
