OpenAI’s ChatGPT Search is now live for all users, offering several new features. The search engine automatically determines which questions to route through the search function or allows users to tap a “Search the web” icon in the chat interface. It provides summarized answers from various online sources, as well as “rich” content like embedded photos and YouTube videos.
Powered by a fine-tuned GPT-4o model, ChatGPT Search offers information from the web, including sports scores, news, and stock quotes, along with links to relevant sources. Users can refine their search by asking follow-up questions.
Initially only available for premium users, ChatGPT Search is now accessible to non-paying users as well. The feature has been made faster and can be set as the default search engine for any web browser. A mobile-friendly experience has also been improved, with better-organized business info on Apple Maps for iOS users.
ChatGPT Search is available in Advanced Voice Mode, OpenAI’s real-time conversational feature, where users will soon be able to access up-to-date web information while using the mode on mobile or desktop.
OpenAI aims to refine ChatGPT Search to address concerns from publishers who believe AI-powered search tools threaten to cannibalize traffic. To mitigate this, OpenAI has incorporated feedback from partners about how it determines article relevance and summary length.
