OpenAI has delayed the release of its first AI device, previously touted as a game-changer in the tech industry. The device was set to be released at least a year before shipping begins. According to court filings, io – the consumer hardware team OpenAI acquired from Jony Ive’s design studio for $6.5 billion – plans to release a non-in-ear wearable device.
In June, leaders from io testified that the first device they plan to release won’t be an in-ear or wearable device. The prototype was at least a year away from being offered for sale, and its design is not yet finalized. OpenAI had previously referenced the io brand but was forced to remove public references due to a temporary restraining order issued by Iyo, an audio device startup that claims OpenAI infringed on its trademark.
OpenAI’s response to Iyo’s lawsuit states that they considered various form factors, including desktop-based and mobile devices, wireless and wired options. The company even purchased earbuds and headphones from other companies as part of their early prototyping efforts.
While it’s unclear what the final device will look like, it’s clear that OpenAI has been exploring different ideas for its first hardware release. The delay is a setback for those eagerly awaiting the company’s entry into the hardware market.
