OpenAI’s efforts to develop its next major model, GPT-5, are behind schedule and facing cost concerns. According to a report in The Wall Street Journal, the company has not yet achieved results that justify the significant expenses associated with developing this new model.
The development of GPT-5, code-named Orion, is expected to take 18 months. While OpenAI has made progress with training runs, the initial run was slower than anticipated, and a subsequent larger run may be both time-consuming and costly. The company’s efforts aim to improve the model by training it on large amounts of data.
In an effort to accelerate development, OpenAI is creating fresh data through coding and solving math problems, as well as using synthetic data generated by another model, o1. However, despite these efforts, GPT-5 has not yet demonstrated significant advancements that would warrant continued investment in the project.
