OpenAI’s Sora AI Video Generator Now Publicly Available in US

Artificial intelligence video generator Sora is now accessible to anyone in the US, following its initial release for select artists and safety testers. The tool can create AI video clips based on a user’s written prompts.

Sora, also known as a text-to-video generator, has been praised by OpenAI for enabling people to explore new forms of creativity and push the boundaries of video storytelling. However, critics have raised concerns about its potential misuse for disinformation and deepfakes.

The tool was tested by tech reviewer Marques Brownlee, who described the results as “horrifying and inspiring at the same time.” While Sora performed well with landscapes and stylistic effects, it struggled to realistically depict basic physics. Some film-makers who previewed the tool reported strange visual defects.

To mitigate potential risks, OpenAI has announced plans to limit uploads of specific people and block content with nudity. The company aims to prevent child sexual abuse materials and sexual deepfakes from being shared on the platform.

Sora is now available to users who already subscribe and pay for OpenAI’s tools. However, it will not be accessible in the UK or Europe due to compliance requirements.
