The Software Freedom Conservancy has announced the “production release” of the OpenWrt One, a router designed specifically to run the popular open-source operating system. Priced at $89, this device is a mesh-friendly solution for those looking for a hassle-free setup.
Key features include WiFi 6 support, two Ethernet ports (one 2.5 GbE and one 1 GbE), USB ports, a MikroBUS socket for expansion modules, and a rechargeable backup battery. The OpenWrt One is also “unbrickable” thanks to a recovery switch.
However, some users have raised concerns about the limited Ethernet port options, which may not be sufficient for heavy server use. Additionally, setting up a mesh network with OpenWrt requires configuration, even with the 802.11s protocol.
The Software Freedom Conservancy receives a $10 donation for every unit sold, earmarked for OpenWrt development.
