A strong case of avian flu has infected two Multnomah County house cats, killing them after being fed a specific type of pet food called “Wild Coast Raw.” The Oregon Department of Agriculture confirmed that both cats consumed the same brand and formulation of raw pet food.
The pets’ owner, Christine Knopp, reports her cat Hattie died suddenly from a fever, followed by incoordination, and the other cat remains hospitalized due to potential symptoms. Experts warn that anyone interacting with possibly infected animals should change their clothes and shoes afterward and immediately take sick pets to a vet.
In contrast, birds on commercial farms are killed humanely when avian flu outbreaks occur, typically through shutting off ventilation systems and adding heat or carbon dioxide. However, advocates argue this method can be slow and inhumane, similar to leaving animals in hot cars.
