French Open 2025 saw Naomi Osaka lose to Spain’s Paula Badosa in the first round, despite saving a set point and dominating the first-set tie-break. The 27-year-old four-time major winner struggled with blisters on her fingers during the match.
Osaka briefly left her news conference to compose herself after becoming upset, citing that she “hates disappointing people” as time goes on, she should be doing better. This was Osaka’s first loss in almost two years and her worst result since returning to the WTA Tour after maternity leave in 2023.
Earlier on Monday, ninth seed Emma Navarro suffered an upset with a 6-0 6-1 thrashing by Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro. Navarro had not held serve all match, claiming just 30 of the 86 total points and winning only 44% of her first-serve points.
The tournament also saw Caroline Garcia bid an emotional farewell to Paris as she lost in the first round to American Bernarda Pera. Garcia’s final French Open singles appearance ended after a quarter-final showing in 2017.
Meanwhile, Naomi Osaka’s team expressed support for the player after her loss, highlighting the need for improvement and recovery from injuries.
