Oscar Piastri Takes Pole at Spanish GP, Beating Lando Norris

Oscar Piastri has secured his fourth career pole position in Formula 1, beating McLaren teammate Lando Norris to the top spot at the Spanish Grand Prix. This victory marks Piastri’s first pole of the 2025 season and comes after a closely contested qualifying session.

Piastri made the difference on the final run of Q3, posting a time of 1m11.546s that was just 0.209s faster than Norris’s effort. The Australian driver had previously opened with a lap time of 1m11.836s, but improved his time significantly in the final sector to secure pole.

Max Verstappen and George Russell set identical times to occupy the second row, with Verstappen ahead of Russell due to being the first to cross the line. Lewis Hamilton secured fifth place, beating Mercedes replacement Andrea Kimi Antonelli and Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc, who struggled in Q3.

Pierre Gasly qualified eighth for Alpine, while Isack Hadjar continued his impressive form by securing a top-10 berth in ninth. Fernando Alonso was initially optimistic about his chances but ultimately dropped down to 10th place after the final run.

The Williams team suffered a setback in Q2, with Albon missing the cutoff to Q3 and Gabriel Bortoleto being the only driver from the Sauber team to make it through to the next stage. Rookies Yuki Tsunoda and Liam Lawson struggled in Q1, with Tsunoda starting dead last on the grid due to losing time in each sector.
