The Oscars are shaping up to be a wild ride, with many unexpected surprises in store for the March 2 ceremony. While Golden Globe winners and Screen Actors Guild nominations have narrowed down the contenders, there’s still plenty of unpredictability left.
In the Best Picture category, “Anora” and “A Complete Unknown” seem like the front-runners, but “September 5,” “Nickel Boys,” and “Challengers” are dark horses with a chance at the top spot. The Producers Guild Awards have been a reliable indicator of Best Picture winners in recent years.
The acting categories are also filled with surprises. Adrien Brody is a shoo-in for Best Actor, while Timothée Chalamet, Ralph Fiennes, and Colman Domingo are strong contenders. Sebastian Stan’s Oscar chances are threatened by his split performances, but Daniel Craig could sneak in if he loses out to more prominent actors.
The supporting categories are just as unpredictable. Kieran Culkin is a clear favorite for Best Supporting Actor, joined by Jeremy Strong, Yura Borisov, and Edward Norton. Jonathan Bailey’s SAG nomination doesn’t necessarily guarantee him an Oscar nod, while Denzel Washington and Guy Pearce are strong contenders for the fifth spot.
For Best Supporting Actress, Zoe Saldaña seems to be in pole position with her Globe win, but Ariana Grande is also a shoo-in thanks to her SAG, BAFTA, and Globe nods. The category is ripe for chaos, with seven actresses vying for three spots.
The Best Director category features four DGA nominees who have won Golden Globes earlier this month. Sean Baker, Jacques Audiard, Edward Berger, and Brady Corbet are the front-runners, while James Mangold’s Oscar chances are uncertain. Coralie Fargeat, responsible for “The Substance,” is a long shot at avoiding an all-male category.
Overall, the 2024 Oscars will be a wild ride, full of surprises and upsets. Who knows what will happen on March 2?
