The 97th Academy Awards, held on Sunday night, saw a triumphant return to in-person ceremonies after last year’s virtual event due to the Los Angeles wildfires. Director Sean Baker’s dramatic comedy “Anora” stole the show, claiming five awards including Best Picture and Best Actress for star Mikey Madison.
The ceremony began with a poignant tribute to the city of Los Angeles, featuring film clips that acknowledged the devastating impact of the wildfires on the industry. The special segment was followed by a chilling performance by “Wicked” stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo.
Oz-set musical/crime drama hybrid “Emilia Pérez” led with 13 nominations, but ultimately fell short of claiming top honors. Oz-set drama “The Brutalist,” which starred Adrien Brody as a Holocaust survivor and architect, took home three awards, including Best Actor for Brody.
