Comedian Conan O’Brien recently shared an amusing anecdote about his experience hosting the Oscars, revealing that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has strict rules for its iconic statue. O’Brien pitched a promotional ad featuring himself and a 9-foot tall Oscar statue in a domestic partnership, but was met with resistance from the Academy.
O’Brien described one idea, where he would vacuum next to the statue on a couch, saying “Could you at least lift your feet? Or could you at least get up and help? Load the dishwasher?” However, the Academy refused, citing that the statue cannot be horizontal. O’Brien was also told that the statue must always be naked.
The comedian found it baffling that the Academy would enforce such unusual rules for its statue. Despite their refusal to adapt his ideas, O’Brien remains optimistic about next year’s ceremony and hopes to showcase his comedic skills once again.
