Oscars Nominees Face Financial Struggles Behind the Scenes

Oscar-nominated director Brady Corbet revealed that he made “zero dollars” from his last two films, including the 2025 contender “The Brutalist.” Corbet, who is also a best director nominee this year, shared his struggles in promoting his film on Marc Maron’s “WTF” podcast.

Corbet stated that he and his partner had to live off their old paycheck for three years as they promoted “The Brutalist,” which premiered at the Venice Film Festival in September 2024. He added that many filmmakers face financial difficulties, particularly during award campaigns.

“I mean, you’re not paid to be promoting a film,” Corbet said. “That’s a real thing.” The director works seven days a week and hasn’t had a day off since Christmas break as he promotes his film worldwide.

Corbet’s comments highlight the often-overlooked financial realities that many filmmakers face when dealing with promotion, award campaigns, and personal commitments.
