Ohio State legend Jack Sawyer made history Friday night with a 82-yard scoop and score against his former roommate Quinn Ewers and the Texas Longhorns. The play, which came on 4th down, sealed the Buckeyes’ 28-14 win over the Longhorns and sent them to the national championship game.
Sawyer’s past with Ewers dates back to their time as roommates at Ohio State, where Sawyer eventually became a standout player after Ewers transferred to Texas. Ewers even joked about Sawyer during the game, saying “that’s my boy” before adding that he has a lot of respect for him and his teammates.
The Buckeyes’ path to the championship was far from straightforward. A turnover on downs by Texas, followed by an interception on their next drive, left them with little chance to catch up. Despite being considered underdogs going into the game, Ohio State dominated the Longhorns and will face off against No. 7 Notre Dame in the national championship on January 20th.
The Buckeyes’ victory has also raised questions about Ewers’ future plans, which he hinted at before the game that included playing in the NFL next season. It remains to be seen if his expectations will change now that he’s no longer on the field competing with his former teammate.
