OU Beats Nebraska in NCAA Regional Opener

Oklahoma University (36-20) defeated Nebraska (32-28) 7-4 on Friday at the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional. The win sets up a showdown with regional host North Carolina on Saturday.

Right-handed pitcher Malachi Witherspoon had an impressive outing, pitching six scoreless innings and striking out nine. His team-leading seven strikeouts are now at eight-plus in four of his last seven outings. Witherspoon’s three hits surrendered match a season low, as he looks to build momentum for the postseason.

Oklahoma’s offense came alive with two home runs, courtesy of freshman Drew Dickerson and junior Easton Carmichael. The pair of homeruns gave Oklahoma an early lead, before they extended their advantage in the fifth inning on Trey Gambill’s RBI single.

The game’s final score was determined by a three-run double from Nebraska’s Max Buettenback. However, senior closer Dylan Crooks secured the win with two outs in the ninth, notching his 15th save of the season and surpassing program history.
