Outgoing Army Chief of Staff Urges Courageous Leaders Amid Departure

Outgoing US Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George has told Pentagon officials that American soldiers deserve “courageous leaders of character” in an email to his colleagues, just days after being ousted by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. George, who was forced into immediate retirement, praises the bravery and dedication of US soldiers but criticizes the bureaucracy hindering their success.

Gen. George previously served as senior military assistant to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin from 2021 to 2022 before becoming Army chief of staff in 2023. He has been replaced by Gen. Christopher LaNeve, who will act as interim chief of staff until a new leader is appointed.
