Outside Lands Continues to Thrive as an Independent Music Festival

Outside Lands, a 17-year-old music festival in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, is set to kick off its 17th edition this Friday. The festival has managed to maintain its independent roots despite the challenges of the global economy and rising costs. Co-founders Rick Farman and Allen Scott attribute their success to their mission to create a festival that reflects Bay Area culture.

“We started in 2008, and we’ve been fortunate to come out of that class still standing,” Scott said. “We punch above our weight in terms of people going to concerts.” The festival books a diverse lineup, catering to all ages and generations, which helps attract a loyal crowd.

The two co-founders also credit their ability to innovate and stay unique as key factors in Outside Lands’ success. They’ve introduced new attractions such as a “City Hall” where festival-goers can get legally married, and a cannabis sales area. The festival’s focus on Bay Area culture has set it apart from other music festivals.

Farman believes that the key to their survival lies in their ability to adapt and innovate. “We see every year that we’re always trying to find new things,” he said. “It’s an ongoing process, but I think it’s what keeps us fresh and relevant.”

As the festival landscape continues to evolve, Outside Lands is poised to remain one of the biggest independent music festivals in the country. With its unique blend of Bay Area culture and diverse lineup, it’s clear that Outside Lands will continue to thrive as a must-attend event for music lovers.
