Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin scored his record-breaking 895th career goal, but the team fell short with a 4-1 loss to the New York Islanders on Sunday. The Islanders won their second straight game after losing six in a row and have improved to 34-32-10 overall.
Ovechkin’s goal came at 7:30 into the second period, breaking a tie with Wayne Gretzky. However, it was not enough to propel the Capitals to victory as they fell behind early. Marc Gatcomb scored two goals for the Islanders, with Jean-Gabriel Pageau adding another. The Islanders took a 3-1 lead in the third period on a goal by Pageau after a review showed that goalie Charlie Lindgren had pushed the puck across the line.
The loss dropped the Capitals to second place in the Metropolitan Division, just one point behind West-leading Winnipeg. The team will host Carolina on Thursday and will need to bounce back quickly from this setback.
