Ovechkin Moves Closer to Breaking Gretzky’s Record with Goal No. 887

Alex Ovechkin scored his 887th goal, moving eight goals away from breaking Wayne Gretzky’s record of 894, as the Washington Capitals defeated the San Jose Sharks 5-1 at SAP Center on Saturday.

Ovechkin’s goal came in the third period and was assisted by Tom Wilson. The Capitals took a 3-0 lead early in the game, with goals from Dylan Strome, Aliaksei Protas, and Taylor Raddysh. Macklin Celebrini scored for the Sharks at 6:19 of the third period, but the Capitals responded with two more goals, including Ovechkin’s.

The win marked the Capitals’ sixth consecutive victory, improving their record to 44-15-8. Tom Wilson added two assists to his tally, while Logan Thompson made 19 saves in goal for Washington. The Capitals are now 3-4-0 in their last seven games and have a .727 points percentage on the road this season.

Ovechkin’s milestone was celebrated by the Sharks’ goalie Georgi Romanov, who became the 217th different goaltender Ovechkin has faced in the regular season. The Capitals are set to close out their California road trip with an improved record of 23-8-2 as visitors this season.
