Over 1,000 Palestinians Killed Trying to Access Food in Gaza

Israeli forces have killed over 1,000 Palestinians since May while trying to access food and aid in the Gaza Strip. The UN human rights office says that more than 766 people were killed at sites run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, an American contractor. Desperation is mounting as Israel’s blockade and nearly two-year offensive put the territory of over 2 million people at risk of famine.

The Gaza Health Ministry has reported 80 children dead from starvation since the beginning of the war. Aid groups say that the conditions for starvation exist in Gaza, and during hunger crises, people can die from malnutrition or common illnesses. Israel eased a blockade in May, allowing some aid to enter through UN-run systems, but it’s not enough.

The Israeli military denies firing at crowds of Palestinians trying to access aid, claiming only warning shots were fired. However, Palestinian witnesses and health officials say that Israeli forces regularly fire toward crowds, killing dozens.

A joint statement from 28 Western-aligned countries condemned the “drip feeding of aid” and “inhumane killing of civilians.” The US and Israel rejected the statement, blaming Hamas for prolonging the war.

In recent strikes, at least 25 people were killed across Gaza, including three women and three children. Eight Palestinians died in an overnight strike that hit crowds waiting for aid trucks, with at least 118 wounded.
