Blizzard has finally explained how hero bans will work in competitive Overwatch 2. Starting with Season 16 on April 22, teams can ban heroes they deem overpowered or frustrating to play against. This feature is common in other games like League of Legends and aims to let players remove problematic heroes while gathering data for future rebalancing.
When launching into a competitive match, players will have the option to select their “Preferred Hero” and then rank three other heroes to ban. All teams will vote simultaneously, but chat will be blocked until voting ends. The votes are tallied based on a specific order:
1. The team with the most votes for a hero guarantees that hero is banned.
2. If there’s a tie, the opposing team becomes the “second” team and bans their most or second most voted heroes if they weren’t already banned.
3. In cases of further ties, the third most voted hero from either team is removed.
4. The second most voted hero on the first team is also banned.
There’s a limit of two bans per role. Players can choose to skip voting and let their teammates decide instead.
Hero bans arrive with Season 16, which also includes Stadium mode, five-on-five matches, currency upgrades, and third-person play options.
