Blizzard has outlined how heroes will work in Overwatch 2’s new Stadium mode. When the mode launches on April 22, all 17 playable heroes – a mix of classic characters and those exclusive to OW2 – will be available for third-person play.
The heroes are divided into three roles: Tanks, Damage, and Support. Each hero has unique tweaks that change their kits, but the initial roster is limited compared to the base game. The Stadium mode features teams of five players, consisting of one Tank, two Supports, and two Damage units.
The mode’s skill system allows players to choose from a selection of upgrades, including skills, weapons, and equippable items. However, Blizzard will also provide build suggestions. Upgrades cost Stadium Cash, which is earned based on match performance. Players can earn bonus cash by defeating a “Bounty” player, who is performing well on the opposing team.
There are also balancing features to help struggling players: skills purchased in rounds 1, 3, and 5 are free. The launch of Stadium coincides with Season 16 and the introduction of new damage character Freja. While Freja won’t be playable initially, future updates will add more heroes to the Stadium roster.
This mode promises to bring a fresh experience to Overwatch 2, as GameSpot’s hands-on preview showcased its potential for competitive gameplay.
