Overwatch 2’s Radical Third-Person Shift: What You Need to Know

Overwatch 2 is shaking things up with its highly anticipated Stadium mode. Gone are the days of first-person gameplay, replaced by a radical new third-person camera perspective. In an exclusive interview with Daily Star, Game Director Aaron Keller reveals that implementing this change was no easy feat.

The biggest challenge, according to Keller, lies in tracking enemy movements. With abilities like Zarya’s bubbles that can do pulse damage, recognizing what’s happening on teammates becomes increasingly difficult when playing in first-person mode.

“Pulling the camera out to a third person perspective allows us to be able to track enemies and recognize what’s going on with teammates,” Keller explains. “There’s more lava on the ground, and abilities like Zarya’s bubbles make it easier for teammates to see what’s happening.”

The team had to create new animations for every hero, taking into account positioning, rotation, and custom effects for specific heroes’ abilities.

Keller attributes the success of this new camera perspective to a significant amount of time and energy invested in making UI elements work correctly. The result is a third-person experience that feels rewarding and polished.

“We’re continuing to put time and energy into even releases past Stadium’s launch,” Keller says, confident that Overwatch 2 has made a great version of third-person gameplay.
