A recent study published in Nature Geoscience has found that Earth’s oxygen supply is expected to run out within the next billion years due to an increase in solar flux and a subsequent reduction in carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere. The researchers, led by environmental scientist Kazumi Ozaki, used advanced computer simulations to analyze the evolution of gases in the atmosphere over time.
The study attributes the rise in methane levels to changes in the Sun’s luminosity and variations in carbon dioxide, among other factors. However, the good news is that humans will not suffer from this depletion immediately. The researchers predict that oxygen-rich atmospheric conditions will cease to exist within a billion years, allowing for some breathing room before this catastrophic event occurs.
Interestingly, this phenomenon is not new to Earth’s history, having occurred previously during the Archean Eon 2.4 billion years ago when the atmosphere lacked free oxygen. Scientists have now confirmed that oxygen is essential for life as we know it, and its depletion will have significant consequences for the planet.
