The medications Ozempic and Wegovy have become common treatment options for weight loss in patients with diabetes. At the University of Tennessee Internal Medicine clinic, 25% of patients qualify for weight-reduction injections every day.
Dr. Shelley Ost, an internist and associate professor at the university, says that sending insurance claims can be overwhelming for her practice. Two-thirds of insurance pre-authorizations are now for these three medications: Ozempic, Wegovy, and Zepbound.
Ozempic and Wegovy work by mimicking a naturally occurring hormone in the body that regulates blood sugar levels. They also slow down stomach emptying, helping to regulate digestion. This has led to remarkable weight loss results, with patients losing 10-17% of their body weight in under 18 months when taking the highest dose of Wegovy.
These medications have transformed the lives of many people struggling with weight issues, and their effectiveness has made them a popular choice among healthcare providers.
