PA Lawmakers Weigh In on Trump’s Tariff Plan with Skepticism

President Donald Trump announced a new round of tariffs on Wednesday, sparking skepticism among some Republican lawmakers from Pennsylvania. U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly, a solid Trump ally who led the congressional task force investigating the assassination attempt against presidential candidate in his hometown, expressed uncertainty about how auto tariffs might work.

Kelly said the supply chain is global and he’s unclear how Trump’s tariffs would break it out. He anticipates the impact on consumers, particularly in Pennsylvania, where auto tariffs will affect inventory and pricing. Kelly remains supportive of Trump but acknowledged that people “will suffer” if the tariff plan goes ahead.

Pennsylvania Democrats joined Shapiro in denouncing Trump’s plan. U.S. Rep. Dwight Evans wrote that Trump’s ill-advised tariff actions will release a new wave of price hikes on hard-working families. Sen. John Fetterman criticized President Trump’s combative approach on trade toward Canada and Mexico.

Other Republican lawmakers, such as U.S. Rep. Rob Bresnahan and U.S. Rep. Ryan Mackenzie, offered wait-and-see caution ahead of the announcement, citing uncertainty about what it will ultimately mean to consumers. U.S. Rep. Dan Meuser defended the tariffs, arguing that they aim to create a more fair marketplace around the world.

As Trump’s tariff plan takes shape, lawmakers and business leaders are watching with concern, wondering how it will affect Pennsylvania’s economy and people.
