Heavy monsoon rains have triggered widespread flooding and landslides in northern Pakistan, killing at least 194 people across the region. The majority of deaths occurred in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in northwest Pakistan.
According to the disaster authority, most of the deaths – 180 – were reported in the mountainous Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, with five more killed in Gilgit-Baltistan and nine in Pakistan-administered Kashmir.
A helicopter on a rescue mission crashed due to bad weather, killing its crew of five. Dozens of people were injured as their homes were destroyed in villages hit by the floods.
Rescuers evacuated 1,300 stranded tourists from Mansehra district, where landslides occurred on Thursday. At least 35 people are reported missing in these areas.
The Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rain alert for the northwest region, urging people to avoid vulnerable areas. The annual monsoon season brings significant rainfall to South Asia, but also causes destruction through landslides and flash floods.
Climate change is believed by some scientists to be increasing the intensity and frequency of such events in the Himalayas, which are prone to flooding and landslides.
