Pantone’s 2025 Color of the Year is Mocha Mousse, a Softer Alternative to Brights

Pantone has announced its 2025 color of the year as Mocha Mousse, a demure and serene brown shade that marks a departure from the bold and bright hues of previous years. The color company’s vice president, Laurie Pressman, says that Mocha Mousse is “a mellow brown infused with a sensorial and comforting warmth” that evokes feelings of comfort and wellness.

The choice of Mocha Mousse reflects a desire for harmony and balance in the world after prolonged periods of uncertainty, according to Pressman. The color also taps into the growing trend of “little treat culture,” where people seek small pleasures and comforts in their daily lives.

Unlike previous years’ colors, which were chosen based on consumer data from various industries, this year’s selection is more personal and subjective. Pantone’s executive director, Leatrice Eiseman, says that the reaction to color is deeply personal and can evoke strong emotions and memories.

To bring Mocha Mousse to life, Pantone will collaborate with commercial partners to create installations and products in the shade. For example, Post-it will offer sticky notes inspired by the color, while online retailer Society 6 will offer art created using the palette. The first installation of Mocha Mousse will be at the London Eye, where it will light up the skyline.

The announcement has sparked a debate about the significance of color in our lives and how it reflects our mood and emotions. While some may find Mocha Mousse too subtle, others see it as a refreshing change from the bold brights of previous years.
